Summary
Air is a unique roller coaster experience offering the breathtaking sensation of flight. Rather than boarding traditional trains, guests are loaded into "crafts". Before the train leaves the station, these crafts tilt back 90 degrees, sweeping your feet up behind you. Once that happens, you're in the flying position, which you remain in until the end of the ride.
Air really is a world first, and so queues for the attraction are still large today. This used to be emphasised by the poor reliability of the attraction when it first opened, but several modifications have ensured that downtime is no longer such an on-going issue.

History
The idea for Air came about after the installation of Nemesis in 1994. Alton Towers, particularly influenced by John Wardley, engaged in talks with B&M over a brand new concept ride which had never been attempted before. It was such a radical idea that although the project was making progress, it had to be postponed as the park delivered Oblivion, another world first, but significantly more simple in its implementation. Once Oblivion was out of the way discussions and ideas continued to be exchanged between the park and manufacturer until a planning application was finally submitted in 2000. It was a plan which had took six years to create.
The site where Air lies now was originally occupied by The Beast, until it was removed in 1997. The site remained dormant for three years until the planning application submitted in 2000 was approved. In the 2000/2001 closed season construction started, and continued right up until the rides opening day - 16th March 2002.

) A completely different experience to any other in the park, but a really good one. Only down sides are long ques and it's a little slow.
