Further delays for The Smiler
Alton Towers have today confirmed that The Smiler will not be opening on 23rd May. Wednesday 22nd May 2013 - Alton Towers have today confirmed that The Smiler will not be opening on 23rd May.

The resort took to Twitter just after midday today to confirm that their new record-breaking roller coaster, The Smiler, will not meet its planned opening date of 23rd May 2013.

At present the park have only cited "Teething Problems" as the reason for the delay, however speculation online suggests this may be due to the health and safety executive not yet clearing the ride area (such as queueline and emergency exits) for opening.

Alton Towers have yet to announce a new opening date for the ride and have asked anyone planning on visiting over the weekend to visit an FAQs page on their website for the most up-to-date information. Anyone who has pre-booked tickets for the day can get their tickets revalidated to visit again once The Smiler has opened. The resort has also offered to move reservations at the hotels to new dates.

The announcement marks the second time the park has had to delay the launch of the world's first 14-looping rollercoaster, it was originally intended to open on March 16th 2013.

Despite the news, Towers Nerd Trip #38 will still be going ahead, as will our live coverage of the day.
