The Smiler to open on 23rd May
Alton Towers Resort's new world beating roller coaster will open on 23rd May 2013. Wednesday 8th May 2013 - Alton Towers have today announced that the world's first "14-looping rollercoaster" - The Smiler - will open at the theme park on Thursday 23rd May.

Although no confirmation has been given, it is believed that The Smiler will open to the public at 10:00 AM, although there are some suggestions that there will be a brief media event first.

The final launch date of the ride is over two months after the originally slated opening of 16th March.

The decision to open The Smiler on a Thursday follows Thorpe Park's decision to launch their new 2012 attraction The Swarm on a weekday. The midweek launch gives the park a chance to iron out any last minute faults with the ride before the busy weekend and half-term holidays which follow.

The park have recently started night time testing of the new ride which will be the park's first large coaster investment since Thirteen in 2010.

As well as announcing the opening date, Alton Towers have also released a third video in their current viral marketing series for the new ride. The latest video stars Gerry Cannell as the mysterious Doctor Kelman (first seen in the Sanctuary scare maze at the park). The videos can be viewed at
