View Full Version : Earthquake!

Last night at approximately 1am there was an Earthquake, that register at 5.3 on the Richter Scale, and was the biggest quake to hit the country in 25 years. The quake was centered at Market Rasen in Linconshire, but apparently was felt as south as London and as north as Newcastle.

We certainly felt it in Worksop, I had not long got to sleep when it hit and to say it woke me up was an understatement, the house properly shook and really freaked me out if I'm honest. I think the main thing was not really knowing what had happened, our first thoughts were the wind, as it has been stupidly windy round by us lately, but obviously the wind doesn't make the house shake unless it's a tornado. So I thought it must have been a quake, but even thinking that seemed rediculous, as it just never really happens does it. Then when we turned the radio on this morning, it is all anybody is talking about.

So did any of you feel the quake, wherever you are in the country?

Wednesbury (Midlands) got hit quite weirdly, it lasted 10-14 seconds at exactly 12:58am. I was watching Shaun of the Dead on ITV2, and just saw my TV & PC monitor (both flatscreen's) shake rapidly, I did worry about my shelf with my speakers on as its getting rather weak

That's the 2nd one to hit the UK, the 1st one I slept through and totally missed it :( but this one I was wide awake! I did though think all night that it'd happen again, & again, so did scare me alot!

Apparently there was an aftershock at about 4am, but that only measured about 1.8, and was not widely felt.

I first found out about the earthquake at around 6:15am, when my girlfriend rang me to tell me her story! - I wish I could experience an earthquake, but I was asleep! I remember that I was asleep the last time we had something like this, must have been about 5 years ago... it must be a strange scenario to find yourself in!

It was 2001/2002 mark when the epicenter was in Dudley! I slept through that one, but this one last night, it was weird!!

I slept right through it so it was very weird when people were asking about the earthquake.

Got woken up by a hanger on my wardrobe door rattling off the door at about 00:58am. Didn't even think about the possibility of an earthquake but it all made sense when I woke up this morning.

Well apparently a couple of people in Falmouth have said they felt it, but I think they're talking out of something they shouldn't. :P

i was asleep, 'cause to be honest, its not all that bad considering people get like 8 and stuff, and my mum just thought it was the wind rattling the windows, cause our house is really old anyways so the wind like knocks it about, and there was only one person hurt wasnt there? unlucky guy!

Yep, as far as I've heard, suffered a broken pelvis when a chimney stack collapsed. That seems to be the main damage done by the quake, either collapsed or unsafe chimneys. I read that the estimated cost for insurance companies will be around the £30 million mark, which is pretty low for an "act of god", when you think last years floods are costing billions.

Lowndesy knows all about that!!:P

Why would you lie about something as stupid as feeling an earthquake?

It's just jumping on the bandwagon isn't it. In the morning it was said that London was as far south that it was felt, but by lunchtime it had spread to the south coast. I guess it's because things like this don't really happen that much in this country, so when they do some people want to say they were "part" of it.

If anybody's interested, here (http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ous/STORE/X2008nyae/ciim_display.html) is a map showing where and how many people have reported feeling the quake.
